I'm gutted to say that we're not going to be doing any more trade events this year... Now, I know what you're all thinking "With the festive period coming up and everyone wanting to buy gifts for their loved ones, not doing trade events is pure madness!!" and you'd be right, if it weren't for the marvel that is the internet. Yep, I know I always said I prefer selling face-to-face, but sadly it's simply too expensive to do "craft fairs" and "village shows" anymore. So we've taken the decision to move much more online and then pick a few events a year to go to. Sadly, due to external influences we've seen a significant rise in material costs, fuel cost etcetcetc and it's meant that driving up and down the country to trade at events and camps has just become impossible for us as we're simply not able to produce and carry enough stock.<br />
Now, perhaps if I was to succumb to the BARRAGE of emails I get from the manufacturers in Delhi, and take them up on the offer to supply their bulk-buy-special-price-for-you-sir, mass produced tat via my stalls then perhaps we'd be able to trade at an event every weekend...but that simply goes against everything we've ever stood for - it's handmade by us or it isn't on the stall.<br />
So don't despair, we're not going away - simply re-locating and in a strange way catching up with the digital age...that being said, why not head on over and check out the Etsy page...we've even got a sale on.<br />

Dragon Day will be on the 17th February, and Candle Day will be on the 19th February. Both days run from 10:30am to 1:00pm. The days will start with a fun craft session ran by Lily and will end with a traditional storytelling session by Gordon.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We strongly recommend booking in advance as places are limited, the cost of this activity is £10 per participant, and places can be booked via our <a href="http://www.wyld-fire.org/p/booking.html">bookings page</a>.</div>

We'll be doing demonstrations of leatherwork over the 2 days, we have some have-a-go pieces for the children (young and old) to try we'll also be manning a stall loaded with our usual array of leather and horn goods.<br />
So if you fancy a day out this weekend to see some traditional skills - spinning, blacksmithing, leather working or heavy horse teams - come along and say hello!<br />
See you in the Autumn sunshine (hopefully!!)<br />

Well the last month or so has been rather awesome... and a little chronologically confusing. Here at Wyld Fire we are used to jumping between the past and present, but this month we've also been visiting the future.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSszvgz3H0rHKCvNjDLWlNuTwOdic1biTrMQXLkYYxJAe1f0ohP-ehDbG2xcfLUh69u2I-drEzhsVsopv0WqQmfjLPdRNZZP83UZzt7G1UGHN8ulVoqLQ4uqRHs9I5ITb1xCc9uMwKFEk/s1600/10514493_10152128642431710_486816812766634777_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSszvgz3H0rHKCvNjDLWlNuTwOdic1biTrMQXLkYYxJAe1f0ohP-ehDbG2xcfLUh69u2I-drEzhsVsopv0WqQmfjLPdRNZZP83UZzt7G1UGHN8ulVoqLQ4uqRHs9I5ITb1xCc9uMwKFEk/s1600/10514493_10152128642431710_486816812766634777_n.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We had the pleasure of working on a fantastic film project, "<a href="https://www.facebook.com/tyoseries">The Young Ones - Safe Haven</a>", a long running project of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TACHYStudios/timeline">TACHY Studios</a>. We had great fun doing this and because it's set in the near future, it meant we could let our imaginations fly when it came to creating costumes. As you can see from the photo we spent some time in front of the camera, as well as doing behind the scenes costuming work. It's a brilliant project and a fascinating story. I'd highly recommend keeping a close eye on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/tyoseries">their facebook page</a> to watch for developments.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbQBZtMJzuxfea079rSwutT471L0Z5ZeZLNlgGnvIy_nRT_Bh9UUM4qEwLDAeTnNjX2YkV2qopgu0uQCrScz8nzU_c_QRbkHhriDrlhlJ3A1fbXg37uV8oFYW6fNyJM3TvQszL0RQ35cU/s1600/IMG_20140730_153122.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbQBZtMJzuxfea079rSwutT471L0Z5ZeZLNlgGnvIy_nRT_Bh9UUM4qEwLDAeTnNjX2YkV2qopgu0uQCrScz8nzU_c_QRbkHhriDrlhlJ3A1fbXg37uV8oFYW6fNyJM3TvQszL0RQ35cU/s1600/IMG_20140730_153122.jpg" height="200" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once we were back in the present it wasn't long before Gordon was stepping into the past at <a href="http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/warkworth-castle-and-hermitage/">Warkworth Castle</a>. He's there as part of their summer holiday activities every Tuesday and Wednesday, helping to provide displays entertaining and educating people about the War of the Roses. The castle itself is spectacular and is a great way to keep kids busy through the Summer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, I must bid you farewell for now as we are hectically getting stock ready for <a href="http://www.paganpride.org.uk/">Pagan Pride</a> and <a href="http://london.paganfed.org/">PF London conference</a>. If you're local to these events we hope to see you there. We will have our usual array of historical crafts, and you can be entertained by some of Gordons storytelling.</div>

Well the bank holiday weekend certainly lived up to British expectations weather wise. We had everything from howling wind, torrential rain and hail to bright sunshine and blue skies.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not that the weather put folk off from coming down to Folklore, Legend and Myth weekend to browse the fine stalls, sample the best mead in the UK and generally enjoy the atmosphere on the recreation anglo-saxon farm in Jarrow. As well as the stalls there was a wondering troop of storytellers, the superbly talented "Moss Troopers" who kept the crowds entertained during the day and kept the living history teams spirits up during the long damp nights.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Wyld Fire not only had a trade stall, selling our usual fayre of horn and leather work, we also made our debut as a "proper" combat display group in our own right. Much fun was had swinging swords and slamming shields into each other. We were delighted to be told it looked "really real, you know"and to be asked by several of our spectators if we would we be able to train them! More on that to follow over the next month or so, hopefully.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are a few pictures from the weekend to whet your appetites for the next events we're at - 1000 years of traditional crafts in Lincoln (no fighting here sadly!) and then Viking Saturday (fighting here!!) with the brilliant bunch that are Viking Chester!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The stall in the glorious sunshine on Monday:</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Shields and swords, ready for action:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A hastily formed defence by Gordon and Monty to see off the danger of Jez, the spearman:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/t31.0-8/10373153_10152070143506039_2804884458996245482_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/t31.0-8/10373153_10152070143506039_2804884458996245482_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
It worked:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t1.0-9/q81/s720x720/10313233_540594256051480_6584025120452873130_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t1.0-9/q81/s720x720/10313233_540594256051480_6584025120452873130_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But he got wise to their tactics in round two and set out to divide and conquer - rather effectively:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/t1.0-9/q77/s720x720/10370988_540594339384805_4594100182897117152_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/t1.0-9/q77/s720x720/10370988_540594339384805_4594100182897117152_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Some cutting drills with Mark and Gordon, the key to success with a sword is lots of practice!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The Winter has passed, Spring has sprung forth green and bright and now Summer chases hard at it's heels!<br />
We're just back into the workshop after a hectic run up to May. Lily and I got married (well hand-fasted but we don't think there's any difference!) and we've been dashing all over the country for trade events and camps.<br />
We were in attendance at the Hexham Spring Fayre doing some living history pieces and then traveled south to Thornborough Henge to celebrate Beltane with some superb folk. Tales were told, horns found good homes and great foaming tankards of mead and ale were raised in revelry and rejoicing.<br />
There will be pictures aplenty as soon as we get them all transferred and uploaded.<br />
We've got a good number of commissions to be cracking on with as well as sorting all our "stock" items - don't worry we'll be showing you pictures of them as soon as we can!<br />
<br />
So now it's all go to get set for Folklore, Myth and Legend at Bede's World at the end of the month.<br />

Hello wonderful folk!<br />
<br />
Some bad news from our online servers!!<br />
We've had some gremlins run rampant through our online filing cabinets - they've pulled out and chewed some of the more important wires connecting said cabinet to our emails.<br />
SO...<br />
If you've been trying to get in touch with us via our contact form, or the online order form over the last 2 months we can't apologise enough for the lack of reply.<br />
We had absolutely no idea anything was amiss until two months worth of queries and updates landed, with a metaphorical thump, in my inbox this morning. Whatever the issue was, it seems to have been fixed/updated/technomanced back to a functioning state.<br />
We are, as we speak, wading through the forms and trying to reply to everyone as fast as we can - 2 months is a long time to hear nothing from a query!<br />
<br />
Please rest assured the gremlins have been herded back into their usual spot in the workshop and they are working hard to produce all the items you lovely folk have requested.<br />
<br />
With the coming of spring we're extremely busy in the workshop getting set for all the upcoming camps. We're still waiting for the "all good" to start courses in the woods and we're hoping to be running courses from the workshop again by the end of June.<br />
<br />
In other news, more regular blog updates will be coming your way as we have a reliable net connection again! So keep your eyes on the site for some introductory skills videos and so on!<br />
<br />
Best wishes and warm sun on your face,<br />
<br />
Gordon<br />

It's from 10-4, Sunday the 27th of October.<br />
We've met so many amazingly talented crafters and makers this year I don't think we'll ever have to buy a commercially produced present EVER again. This got us to thinking...<br />
Why is it that we (in general, as consumers) don't mind shelling out our hard earned money on "stuff and things" that aren't made in the UK, then imported and sold in shops that give little or nothing back to the immediate area (ok, I'm generalising MASSIVELY here, but you get the point right ;) ) and yet folk grumble about paying for hand made items from local crafters?<br />
We'd rather get bits for our house from second hand or antique shops, buy our food from local markets and suppliers (places like the butchers in Wark or Bellingham, the street market in Hexham) than go to a big supermarket chain and so on.<br />
This Yule we're definitely not going to be buying the kids' or our family's presents from toys'r'us or Argos - they will all be hand made, either by ourselves or some of our superbly skilled friends.<br />
I know that I'm preaching to the choir here, since you're reading this, but we should start trying to get our friends, families, co-workers and so on to change their spending habits too.<br />
So thinking ahead to Yuletide and into the coming years -<br />
Buy Local, buy Handmade, be awesome.<br />
See you at Barley!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15987149300450572694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2700780999538230030.post-43102671694526859922013-10-18T12:33:00.005+01:002013-10-18T12:33:55.611+01:00A mad start to Autumn!Well, where do we begin? Autumn is here and the fruit trees are bending low with bountiful harvest, waiting to be picked! The mushrooms are out and we've spent many an evening wondering about in the forest to see what we can find. The latest tally stands at a gallon of cider on to brew, 5kg of beef stew mushrooms<br />
After the bike crash, resulting in a broken collar bone for Gordon, we've been working away carefully but continuously in the workshop - we've taken several commissions for very specific pieces and, having no doubt pestered our suppliers silly with specifications, we've received all the raw materials they are all well and truly underway! We are aiming to have all the orders completed by this time next week, so don't panic you'll have your horns for Samhain!<br />
We've been up and down the country to trade events and craft fairs galore, met some wonderful people and even done some film work for a documentary on the "real Robyn Hoode" (more to come on that later!)<br />
We've made some great friends in the Viking re-enactment groups and pushed forwards with our own little group of late Anglo-saxon to early Viking rabble! (again, more updates on this in the VERY near future)<br />
Our upcoming events list is bulging with exciting fixtures. We're off to the inaugural Norther Healing Arts Project Halloween Fair, in Barley next weekend. so if you're in the Yorkshire/Lancashire part of the country come along and start your Yuletide shopping off right! Check out https://www.facebook.com/events/154554878046841/ for more details on that.<br />
Straight after Barley we are heading to the wonderful Thirlings Farm at Bede's World, Jarrow, Newcastle. We'll be living on the farm as an anglo-saxon family for the whole of the half-term week with our excellent "Meet the Other Folk" overnight storytelling and music event on the night of Samhain, or Halloween...if you're not already booked to do something brilliant, head over to our events page and get yourself a ticket booked!<br />

It is now Gordon's mission to update the blog at least once a week. We will be bringing you another episode of "Going Wyld" very soon as well!<br />
So, has spring finally sprung up here? Yes we know it's pretty much meant to be summer but, Kielder seems to be a few weeks behind the rest of the country. Our Daffodils have only been out for a week or two and the leaves on the trees are just beginning to unfurl. And at the time of writing this, there was a freak and unexpected hail storm...Strange weather north of the wall we can tell you!<br />
It's the perfect time to enjoy Kielder as there are, as of yet, no Midge out and about, the daylight hours are getting longer and it's getting (slightly) warmer, so what are you all waiting for?<br />
<br />

<br />
We've been busy for a couple of months with work in the woodlands pressing ahead apace. The workshop has had a buzz of urgency about it, with courses and craft items keeping us out of mischief.<br />
We've also had the "first" big camp of the year at Thornborough and what a weekend that was. Plenty of new, proud blowing horn owners, many a person supping mead from their new drinking horn or mugs and we found a new partnership with Mark Barber of Howling Rook woodcrafts. We'll tell you more about him in due course!<br />
We've been snapping away with pictures and videos so make sure to head over for a check on the Facebook page to see them!<br />

<br />
Building work is pushing ahead in the woodland with the fire-pit set in and working beautifully. The log store is taking shape and the foot bridges over the wettest ground are beginning to work properly!<br />
We've had a couple of work crews in the woods over the last couple of months and we'd like to say a massive thank you to all those folk who've been up to their knees in mud or getting snowed or rained on just to help us out!<br />
<br />

<br />
In the workshop we've had a blowing horn making session and a leather bottle making day, tea leaf reading and candle rolling, finger weaving and folklore. We've produced some beautiful blowing horns and branched out into drinking horns and Gordon's new favourite thing - horn tankards. Again have a look on Facebook for pictures of these unusual and interesting items.<br />

<br />
We've had our first two "Wyrd Times in the North" folklore events at Kielder castle. Stories, music and good company, in a castle? BRILLIANT times. We're pleased to tell you that the wonderful Nezzie Angel and her harp are to become a (fairly) regular fixture at our events. We can't wait for the next one - "An evening with those who should not be named" fairy tales, real fairy tales. Not the fluffy ones you were told before bed, delve into the world of the true wee folk.<br />
<br />
We are in the process of updating the website with new courses and dates for summer and autumn. So keep your eyes pealed!<br />
<br />
Also at the time of writing this, we were only seven "likes" away from giving a free place on one of our courses to one of you lovely folk, so tell your friends to drop by and give us a "like", you never know - it could be you in the woods with us!<br />

We're really chuffed to be listed as a course provider with these brilliant companies. Check out our affiliates link to see what they're all about!<br />

With that done it's a woodland update from us again! It seems that the weather really cant make up it's mind recently. We've had snow, rain, high winds and finally some promising weather on the horizon. So it was once again time to take up the billhook and head down to the woods. We've finished stripping all the brash from the small trees that we had to fell. All the resulting poles are ready to go to building the essential structures in the woods and all the access routes are cleared and ready to go.<br />
We're hoping to get a work crew together over the half term week and get out into the woods for some building, thinning and the final prep work. We'll keep you up to date, now get out and enjoy the start of the spring!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15987149300450572694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2700780999538230030.post-19275008320326036562013-02-12T19:19:00.002+00:002013-02-12T19:20:37.090+00:00Once more into the beech...Today dawned overcast, grey and cold. I sat with my morning coffee contemplating the pros and cons of heading out to the woods over going down to the workshop (which has a space heater), I looked out of the window and I realised it was snowing. Not "proper" snow, but little frozen flecks and another point to put into the "cons" column...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>After 10 minutes of checking emails and finishing my coffee I decided to head to the woods after all. As it turns out, this was a good call! Once into the trees it was sheltered from the wind and a pretty pleasant working environment.<br />
Armed with the chainsaw, axe and billhook I headed up to the proposed "easy access" top gate and started to work my way into the small beech and birch trees that have populated the old plantation area it was fairly heavy going clearing the old brambles and other brash, thinning out the trees along the "pathway" after about 3 hours, I had a decent width clear from the gate into the ancient woodland area that we will be using as the main camp.<br />
All the trees that had to be felled are going to be stripped down and used for building staves in the camp. Things like the CampKahzi and a wood store will be constructed without using nails/screws etc. and will utilise as much of the felled timber as possible!<br />
As the afternoon wore on I paused for a cup of coffee, from the obligatory thermos flask and shared a lovely moment with a little Sika deer that was obviously coming along to see what was being done to "her"woods...<br />
The following few hours passed in a haze of brambles and brash and just as I was loosing the light in the trees I had the bottom access path cleared too.<br />
After a long period of enforced inactivity thanks to the snow and ice it's really good to be back out in the woods and things are definitely moving on a pace for the coming season!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15987149300450572694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2700780999538230030.post-5101980988082964562013-02-05T21:36:00.000+00:002013-02-05T21:36:52.062+00:00Kit Review: Mora Companion Knife<br />

<div>
Well it's been a quiet couple of months in the woodlands. The weather has made it all but impossible to get into the trees to do anything but walk! First it was a foot of snow covering the ground, turning buried branches into man traps. Next it was the high water from the melt and rain and now it's gale force winds stopping all but the lightest of felling and clearing work. We've found it frustrating but have really enjoyed the changing face of the woodlands over the festive period.</div>
<div>
The centre piece making workshop was a huge success with all attendees going away with a beautiful, unique decoration for their home for christmas! </div>
<div>
So looking ahead into 2013 we've got a load of exciting developments coming your way! New courses, new venues, new events...all will be revealed, in good time mind you!</div>

<a name='more'></a>The latest news is that Wyld-Fire is continuing to move into the practical archaeology of the dark ages. Plans are afoot to construct a norse longship, although this will take some considerable time to organise, we are looking to begin building in late 2013 or early 2014. Any one who is interested in being involved with the project should get in-touch either via Facebook or through our contact form.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We are also delighted to announce that we are to start a living history group! We will be focusing, of course, on the dark ages with a predominantly "viking" feel to the group. We are liaising with a few combat schools at the moment to develop the best, most inclusive combat training package possible</div>
<div>
We are aiming to have a fully functional society group, with crafts people and domestic skills featuring heavily. So if hitting things with other things isn't your style there will be plenty to keep you busy! Having said that, if you feel you'd like to have a go at some combat we'll be more than happy to involve you with training. Again if you'd like to get involved, get in-touch!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We hope you're having a brilliant 2013 and that you are looking forward to the warmer and (hopefully) dryer months to come!</div>

<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>There'll be a day time event consisting of talks on the sun in
mythology and folklore and why the solstice is marked. There will also
be a bushcraft firelighting techniques workshop. There will be an
evening event of yule themed music, storytelling and general merriment.
And, of course, we will be able to watch the sunrise on the 21st from
the eastern edge of a beautiful natural woodland.
The camping is def "back to basics" - (what else would you expect from
us though, eh?), but the surrounding of a fabulous private mixed
woodland are perfect. Directions to the event (which is within 2 miles of train and bus terminals) will be sent out a week prior to the event.</div>
